Kent Ohio knows how to celebrate Black Squirrels

by Lucky on February 14, 2010

Kent, Ohio is known as “The Original Tree City U.S.A.” and is a big promoter of Black Squirrels. The residents of Kent, Ohio seem to have a real love for the furry black critters, who happen to be descendants of London, Ontario Black Squirrels.

The community of Kent boasts a number of businesses that include “Black Squirrel” in the company names: Black Squirrel Radio, Black Squirrel Woodworking, and Black Squirrel Music to name a few.

The initial reaction to these black creatures was less than welcoming: When Black Squirrels were released on the grounds of Kent State University, the students thought they were skunks!

Today, however, the Black Squirrels of Kent Ohio are celebrated attractions. Both the city and the university are proud of their squirrels, holding an annual Black Squirrel Festival in their honor.

Multiple lottery winner and Skwerlpreneur Ric Wallace is a big promoter of the LUCKY Black Squirrels of London, Ontario. He found out about the London-Kent Black Squirrel connection several years ago and has been promoting it ever since. Wallace even created this music video to celebrate the story of London’s Black Squirrels, including their connection to the Black Squirrels in Kent, Ohio.
