Is it a bar? Is it a restaurant? Actually, it’s both! It offers a large selection of beers, with one of the area’s most extensive imported beer lists. They even boast a couple of beers with their namesake: Black Squirrel Amber Bock and Black Squirrel White Ale.
But why the name “The Black Squirrel”? From their website:
The Black Squirrel takes its name from the furry critters that Canada gave to the National Zoo back when Teddy Roosevelt was President. Between 1902 and 1906, 10 of the original Canadian black squirrels and 8 of their offspring were released around the zoo. The black squirrels you see throughout Washington today are descendants of those animals.
If you’ve been reading this site, you might remember we wrote briefly about the Black Squirrels that Canada exported to the National Zoo in Washington. It’s good to see a local Washington DC business celebrating their Black Squirrel History.
To show your support for Black Squirrel History month, why not stop by The Black Squirrel for a pint if you’re in the DC area. If you need directions, you can find them here.
