Marysville, Kansas is a city deserving of recognition for its celebration of its black, furry little residents: Black Squirrels. With only 3721 people, Marysville is relatively small and quiet, but that doesn’t stop it from having a great big love for their Black Squirrels.
This charming community sports an interesting history related to their Black Squirrels. Back in the 1920s, a traveling circus passed through town, spending a few days in the city’s park.
One exhibit was a cage of Black Squirrels. Apparently a child opened the cage, allowing the squirrels to escape. Their numbers have grown, and today both residents and visitors enjoy the sight of all the Black Squirrels.
Many residents have attached squirrel houses to their fences and trees; some people even believe the Black Squirrels are a sign of good luck. In 1972 the city even named the Black Squirrel as the official city mascot, and if you visit the city, you will be greeted by signs proclaiming Marysville Kansas to be Black Squirrel City.
