Council Bluffs, Iowa: Say hello to “Chipper” the Black Squirrel mascot

by Lucky on February 7, 2010

The city of Council Bluffs, Iowa, with a population of 58 268, is situated along the east bank of the Missouri River. Their Lincoln Monument commemorates Lincoln’s selection of Council Bluffs as the eastern terminus for the Transcontinental Railroad.

As previously reported here, the city of Council Bluffs also attracted the attention of Roadside America, featuring them in a post about Black Squirrel Squabbles. Black Squirrels were reported here first by John James Audubon, a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, and namesake of the Audubon Society.

Today the Black Squirrels in Council Bluffs have been acclaimed as the unofficial, yet highly celebrated, city mascot. Their legend says that Council Bluffs has the largest population of Black Squirrels in the country! This has led to a city ordinance proclaiming “Chipper” to be the name of their Black Squirrel mascot. The city has even named an annual event after the furry, black critters: The Black Squirrel Triathlon.

So if you’re traveling to the Council Bluffs area, why not stop by and say hello to Chipper! While you’re at it, take the furry, black creatures a little treat…
