The true odds of picking 7 out of 7 on Lotto MAX

by Lucky on September 24, 2009

Based on the information in the previous post, we will calculate the true odds of picking of the 7 Lotto Max numbers drawn.

To figure out your odds of getting all seven numbers correct: (7/49)*(6/48)*(5/47)*(4/46)*(3/45)*(2/44)*(1/43)

To convert this to a fraction will make it easier to understand:
1/[(7/49)*((6/48)*(5/47)*(4/46)*(3/45)*(2/44)*(1/43)]

1/[(0.142857142857143)*(0.125)*(0.106382978723404)*(0.0869565217391304)*(0.0666666666666667)*(0.0454545454545455)*(0.0232558139534884)]

=1: 85,900,584 for a lottery player personally selecting the winning line of numbers for a 7 out of 7 top prize win (these odds do not apply to quick picks).

The lottery corporations are using a lower number based on a $5 play having 3 lines 28,633,528 (85,900,584/3 lines=28,633,528).

With the true odds of 85,900,584 that would mean you would have to purchase 85,900,584 different combinations to have every winning combination costing $429,502,920.00 to win the jackpot with a limit of $50 Million (the possibility of the bonus lines containing the winning numbers was not included for this comparison).

If you are looking to play lotteries with better odds, please check out WinBIG.ca. For example the Sarnia lottery has 7,500 tickets printed compared to the odds of winning the top prize on Lotto Max of 85,900,584.

It is your money: you can go for best odds or the real Loooooooooooooooong shot like Lotto Max with 1 in 85,900,584 to win the top prize.

With the charitable lotteries there is only 1 top prize winner compared to multiple winners possible on the Canadian ball lotteries run by the governments. The choice is yours.

Your math is a little off. You say to buy each combo you’d need $429,502,920.00, but that’s buying 85,900,584 tickets at $5, BUT a $5 ticket gets you 3 sets of numbers. So the real cost is $143,167,640.00

Our math is CORRECT!

Purchasing only 1/3 of the possible 85,900,584 number combinations, like you are suggesting, does not GUARANTEE you would have the winning 7/7 numbers needed to win the JACKPOT.
You have no control over the bonus lines — those numbers are random — and your statement… spending $143,167,640.00… would not guarantee a 7/7 win. Our statement would give you all possible combinations.

If Lotto Max allowed you to pick all 3 lines received for $5, yes you could have all possible combinations to win the Lotto Max jackpot, spending only $143,167,640.00 to win $50 Million if at it’s maximum.

The odds of winning Lotto Max are bad, but much better than Powerball and Mega Million which are TAXABLE.

Our best recomendation is play with a group to increase your chances of a win on Lotto Max.

GOOD LUCK!
