Five years ago today we took possession of the dream home we won and spent our first night in a home about 6 times the size we had. It took 24 days from winning to get all the legal stuff, utilities, alarm, insurance, etc all taken care of.
We lived in the house for 3.5 years before selling. We wanted to be out long before 2010, as some friends who are very successful in financial markets told us the big box houses would drop in value, and you may have to give them away by 2010. We got out January 4, 2008, a while before the financial melt down. Some houses that were for sale at the same time are still on the market for about $80,000 to $120,000+ less. OUCH.
One house on the same street was listed at $819,900 when we were trying to sell, but today is at $699,900.
Tomorrow on June 25, 2009, they draw for this year’s London dream home lottery winner. Boy, it would make an interesting story to win the top prize in the lottery conducted by the same organization 5 years and 1 day from moving into the house they gave us in 2004. If this happens, we will be listed on the Lottery Winners List for a second time.
If this does happen, friends have already joked saying that I should be banned from winning more homes. They would like to see a rule “Limit: one dream home per winner in their lifetime” – LOL.
